I’m so excited to finally share this blog post all about my house plants. It’s always been a dream of mine to live in a house with lots of greenery – especially because I was living in a condo with no natural light for 7 years!
When we first moved into the house and I started filling it with indoor plants, DC thought there is no way I was going to be able to keep them alive. I don’t really blame him. I’m super disorganized and before having a baby, I was never home. So much to OUR surprise, I have somehow been able to not only keep my pants alive but they are THRIVING.
I wanted to film a little video tour of the house so you can see exactly where the plants are located in my home and talk a bit about their care. But I figured writing a post would be the most valuable as a resource to come back to.
So have a look at this video and then you can scroll below for all the details on each plant, some care tips, where I got them and all that good stuff.
Plants I have
- Fiddle Leaf Fig – the giant one you see by my dining room table
- Snake plants – I have a large, medium and small one
- Pothos plants – these are the ones with the long vines and easiest to take care of
- Spider plant – This is the neon green one behind the couch
- Cast Iron plant – AKA fancy nancy behind the couch
- Small Succulents – the only plants I can’t keep alive in my house!
- Weeping Jades – these are the long hanging plants in my office
- Monstera Plant – this is the massive one in my office that keeps growing and growing out of control
- Jade – the middle hanging plant in the office
Where I buy my plants
- My two largest plants are the fiddle leaf fig and the big snake plant – both are from Dynasty
- The weeping jades and the smaller two snake plants are from Sheridan Nurseries
- The rest of the plants are from Ikea
Planters
- I’ve had all my plants for 2-3 years so keep in mind the planters are not new. I’m sure most of these places will still have great and even similar options.
- The fig planter is from Ikea but I have to repot it soon because the roots are too big and it’s falling over
- giant snake planter is from West Elm
- The white hanging planters are from Ikea
- The macrame hangers are from Isabels Design Studio
- The Monstera plant stand is from Hook and Stem
- Other places to buy fun planters: VdeV, Chapters Indigo, Etsy
Basic Plant Care Tips
- the trick to caring for your plant is to get an understanding of your home environment and getting to know the plant itself
- there is no “one watering schedule fits all” scenario
- depending on your home temperature, if there is a vent nearby, what season it is, etc. you may need to change your watering schedule
- generally, I water mine once a week, on the same day each week so I remember
- usually brown and crispy means underwatered
- usually yellow means overwatered
- if you’re unsure what to do, best to underwater as it prevents breeding bacteria
- do the “finger test” when you first get your plant. Stick your finger into the soil one inch deep and feel the soil to see how moist or dry it is. Do this for a few days and determine the watering schedule from there.
Benefits of House Plants
- create peaceful and healthy vibes
- ability to absorb over 50% of the negative bacterias and mould in a home
- proven focus and knowledge retention in a work space
- they look amazing!
